Funny, but as the years progress it does seem to be required.

Work that is. We have to work more to figure out detector design weaknesses, as well as new and different control features, then the in-the-field detector behavior in order to get the most performance out of these useful tools.

Compared to those early days I enjoyed from '65 though to the early '90s, it seems I/we also have to work harder to find productive sites, and in many cases to find any worthwhile place to hunt compared with how things used to be.

Yes, it can call for 'work' but sometimes that is part of the 'fun' of enjoying this great sport.

I am sure there are going to be some happy people out there who chance upon a For Sale gently used Equinox or other make/model detector and will like it and have some success afield.

We don't always enjoy a detector acquisition, be it new or used, as I have experienced just this month. At least I bought some that I do enjoy and just need huntable weather to get out and use them.

Yes, we do see a lot more Equinox models offered up for sale or trade.
