The CZ-3D series detectors.

J.T.

I've used all the land based versions of the CZ, beginning back in the early 90's with an original CZ-6 and a CZ-6a the last half of the 90's. I've had the CZ-5. A few years ago, during a time i was reminiscing about the old days, I acquired an immaculate Los Banos manufactured CZ-3D to have a go with again.

I was quite successful with my CZ's. But as much as I wanted to like them, I came back to the same issues that caused me to move from my CZ-6a to a Minelab Explorer XS when they hit the market back in '99.

The First and biggest problem; the VCO audio for the pinpointing is extremely hard on my hearing; to the point it is painful.

Second, I dig TONS of DEEP rusty nails that false up into the high coin range. Other CZ users told me that I should keep the discrimination dial at the minimum and listen to the low iron audio and that I would dig fewer false signals this way. I still dug lots and lots of DEEP rusty nails.

I'll add two more CON's and say that since the 90's when the CZ's came out, detector ergonomics have improved greatly. Finding an exceptional detector with really good weight and balance is much easier nowadays. Lastly, the CZ electronics design required exacting adjustments at the factory in order to run to its potential. Finding a good one with the segments set to spec that can live up to that CZ depth reputation can be a challenge.

I made a lot of great finds with my CZ-s for the several years I used them. There are admirable qualities to them. I favored the 8" coil for my old yard hunting. If you really want to try one, the used detector market is very soft right now. There are some deals to be had if you're looking. If you can find a 'really good one' on the used market and are willing to spend the time learning this detector, I'm sure you can experience success as well.

As for me, I enjoyed the CZ's back in the day but have current detectors that I prefer over them for my type of detecting.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Of all the Fishers (CZ5,1236X2, 1266) that I have owned, I liked the 1266 the bestthumbs up
