Early morning and this OLD guy just tinkered with OLD and NEW detectors.

It was still dark outside but as I was cleaning my den table off I had a nail and a metal button in my hand. Hummm, looked like a couple of fun 'test samples' to tinker with, so with nails and such in my floor anyway I placed the two on my den floor and oriented the nail a few inches from the button (that produces a US nickel coin read-out), closer to the button, an inch from the button, adjacent to the button and on top of the button.

I used my Compass Coin Hustler TR w/6" DD, Garrett Money Hunter TR-Disc. w/7" Concentric and Master Hunter TR-Disc. w/8" DD, Nokta CoRe w/'OOR' DD, Relic w/5" DD, White's Classic w/5½" Ferret Concentric, MX-7 w/6½" Concentric, Teknetics Omega 8000 w/7" Concentric and Tesoro Bandido II µMAX and Silver Sabre µMAX each w/6" Concentric coils. I compared the performance with each, having the Discrimination set to just reject the iron nail (no low-tone audio in this testing) and for models that featured it I used both a VCO enhanced 2-Tone and a processed audio 3-Tone function.

The toughest test was sweeping cross-wise and length-wise with the nail on top of the metal button front. I knew in advance some would not pass this test, and anticipated those that would. I'm sure glad that five of those detector/coil set-ups passed the test 100%. I didn't use my XLT or Teknetics Mark I Ltd. I also know that some of the above models will pass my tough 'high-conductor' or 'Cache Hunting' test that others won't, but that's why it is handy to have a few models that complement each other so you can pick the best tool for the task at hand.

Oh, and the winners were: If you're ever travelling through little old Vale Oregon, stop by with whatever you are using and give it a try. Then I'll let YOU play with my outfit and find out for yourself. You can guess, but if I posted it I am sure it would start some 'my detector is better than yours' discussion. winking smiley Of course, your guesses of which models got 100% performance might be interesting. thinking

"Your EYES ... the only 100% accurate form of Discrimination!"
