Public Land Access for Coin Hunting in your general area?

February 18, 2019 07:06AM avatar
I know there are some countries/locations where metal detecting might not be welcome anywhere except on Private Property, but during the past few weeks of shut-in times due to a return of winter's cold and windy weather, I have enjoyed spending a little relax-time reading some of the older books about Coin Hunting, mainly related to here in the USA, and taking place in the '70s to early/mid '80s.

When I refer to "Public Lands" I am addressing the common, day-to-day Coin Hunting places we have been enjoying for many decades of 'Recreational Metal Detecting' to include:

City Parks, County Parks or State Parks

Public Schools

Parking Strips and similar easements

Public Sports Fields

Public Beaches at the coast, lakes, ponds, or river beach recreation sites

There can be others types of places as well, but I am wondering if there are any state or country or local restrictions that are related to places we normally associate with Coin & Jewelry Hunting.

• Is it allowed or restricted?

• Are there limits on the times of day you can search them?

• Are there rules in place for the types of recovery tools you are allowed to use?

• If allowed, are Metal Detecting 'permits' required?

In those 'good old days" of long ago, in the early stages of this great outdoor sport, there were very few, if any, restrictions. We were just as welcome to recreate and have fun in public areas as a group having a picnic, playing croquet, gathering for a group day of football. It was great to go anywhere and never be nervous and glance over your shoulder thinking you were doing anything other than just having fun.

Now here we are, on the way to 2020 and we have easily seen the decline from the days when metal detector dealers were listed in phone books, found in many smaller-size towns to larger-size cities, and when there were hundreds of Metal Detecting Clubs all across the USA, and other countries as well. We started out having fun, quickly rose to a level where metal detecting hobbyists could be seen very often all over public places in any size town, and then the hobby peaked and has been dwindling ever since.

I know I have seen locations where a small town had signs banning the use of metal detectors back in the mid-1970s' when it was a fast booming era and many newcomers were not careful with their recovery techniques in a city park, to today where there are no signs and nobody ever says anything to me when I am searching that same, once-banned city park.

So I am curious, are there any restrictions in your general area that readers ought to be aware of before they travel where you live? Please share them and where you are referring to.

Thanks,

Monte
