It was good to get away for a change and put in some urban coin hunting time, even if I concentrated on tot-lots. Times are getting to be more of a challenge, in any coin hunting locations, for the very reasons you mentioned. In so many places you just do not see kids out playing and using parks, or schools sites in the summer, leaving them low-production areas. Twenty years ago I noticed their activity declining, but nothing like we've seen the past decade or more.
There are places that you could say are more or less 'pockets' or regions where we still see bigger families and more outside activity and uses of parks and playgrounds. Quite a bit there in your state, and still some here in Oregon. At least portions of NW Oregon, even though declining, we can still track down some active places, and I know of perhaps four locations in Central and Eastern Oregon where I usually do well in the tot-lots & playgrounds. But, you're right, it's nothing like it used to be.
When I first started metal detecting, in early '65, the clad coins were so new I wasn't even finding them yet. Besides, there still wasn't a mad rush to round up the silver coins in circulation ... at least not yet. Memorial cents were still so few by comparison to all the wheat-backs that they almost seemed like a novelty item. Wheats were abundant and Indian Heads were still somewhat frequent finds if working any older places.
Unless I get very lucky or move to Portland or Salt Lake City where there are more coin-potential sites just waiting to be plucked, I'm never going to reach my projected goal for 2019. Yes, I knew I set a high mark, but why try to accomplish very little when you can set out to achieve a lot? Oh, that's how I thought when I was limber, very mobile, and 35 years old. I just remembered that was a while ago. Oh well, I can still dream of those "good old days" when detecting was so fun and rewarding. It's tougher today and takes more work.
By the way, I did clean up the 261 coins I found on Monday in 7 different towns in my travels, but no silver coins. I managed to spot a couple of wheat-backs, but I admit I had hoped to find more. Only one ring recovered and two other jewelry items, none of which were silver or gold.
I'm hoping to get an e-mail back from an old high school fiend about a 'Turning 70 Year' get-together for our graduating class. It was planned for this weekend, and if it's still on the schedule I might try to get away for a few days to attend. It might be fun, but even more fun for me detecting wise because it would be in cooler weather and in a much more populated city. I know I could really up my coin count for August if I make that journey.
I hope you can get out to a potential,
and productive, site soon.
