I just can't come to like 50 tones. It's 5 most of the time for me, and 2=Tone when I change modes or am mainly working in Iron Nails and similar ferrous debris.. Also, my 11" DD is in my Accessory Coil Tote because the main sites I hunt are terribly littered o the 6" DD will be getting a workout ... starting Wednesday.
Monte.
I find 5 tones works really well for me and my hearing and my detecting state of mind for a lot of areas.
That said, the 50 tones has it's place. Like with my old explorer and etrac's, there is a familiarity to the sound of a quality target when you go over it with the coil using 50 tones. Since each number on the target ID has it's own "sound", when the coil is run across a quality target, it is something akin to playing a chord on the piano or guitar, an audible signature to a target that becomes recognizable.
Think about the signagraph on the XLT as a visual indicator and then think back how a junky corroding target would smear across a section of the display while a coin, token or ring would have a close group of indicators on the display.
Anyway, if you sweep along slowly, listening to the little tune each target plays, and dig some to correlate target types with the audible sounds, you'll come to see the relation.
Trouble comes when there's so many instruments in the target symphony, that it sounds like the first day of 7th grade band class.
