A lot of people around the country are not getting out to spend money, including coinage, and it hasn't been being melted down, nor are a lot of folks so scared they are hoarding a lot of that lower-value change. Nope, it's all politics and not in the best interest of the country.
That said, I would like to see a positive 'political' decision to eliminate the 1¢ coin, and also eliminate the $1 paper currency. Give it a time limit to work through normal spending and recall it along the way. Leave it legal tender, spendable and bankable, but slowly eliminate it when it gets old and worn., but start now to replace it with $1 and new $2 coins. They could be the Susan B. or President size and type, or make them smaller, kind of like Australia did when they had them, so they are closer to our 1¢ size, but just a bit thicker. Make them of copper, and at the same time be making a lot of people happy.
Copper, as we know, would be a much more durable and lasting, better than zinc and better than the paper type we currently have.
Just some opinions.
