Sometimes I to dig up a target either to get it out of way or just out of curiosity.
While I am always curious, I mainly recover a lot of targets because trash removal helps unmask desirable target below or too close to them.

After all those year of thinking I was good I found out I wasn't as good as I thought. Now in my retirement that I have the time to devote to become good and proficient. Time to learn new tricks I have very little to do. Yard, garden, metal detecting sounds good to me. Exercise fresh air, the great outdoors.
Being retired helps afford us more time, but anyone can always keep alert and be willing to learn more. That's what I do every time I turn a detector on. In adealer's shop, in my den, out detecting, just anywhere and anytime, there are three objectives:
1.. To learn something new.
2.. To refresh my memory of something I've learned in the past.
3.. Be a bit more knowledgeable and ready for improved skills and, therefore, success afield.

The only down side is Iowa in the winter with snow and cold temperatures. That will give me time for research and reading.
It used to be easy for me to take advantage of the wintry weather. Where I'm from, Ogden, Utah, they have 223 sunny days a year, but when winter hits they get 41" of snow. So quite a few of those nice sunny days that can be blinding with all of the winter white around you. It made undetectable conditions last a while and I used to spend many hours, and many days, enjoying the warmth of the Weber County Library busy with research. On occasions I'd make use of the library t Weber State University, it was a College back then, and after every winter I would have more information about places I already knew about and hunted, along with a lot of new information about some fresh sites to explorer. It is a good-size library with a lot of information.
Where I have lived for the past five years, here in Vale, Oregon, we have a small but useful City Library, and I have yet to check out the County Library over in Ontario. A weather difference is that here in Vale, we enjoy 209 sunny days a year, but we only average 10" of snowfall. Yes, there are some cold temperature days, but with a lot of snow-free ground there are some just inviting enough to try and find a spot to hunt. And because it doesn't seem so confining like where there's a lot of snow, I found that I dedicate less research time than I used to.
Thus, if you have more bitter cold, frozen ground, and ample snow-covered days, it just might encourage more research time there in Iowa.
I know I need to do more book reading and less looking outside during the winter. When I seen a lot of green and open ground, I'm in the mood to be outside detecting.
