I guess we can blame 'age' on part of it, in that we who are older can remember having money, at least some change if not paper money, in our pockets almost all the time when we were kids. Maybe we had an allowance? Perhaps we got paid for some special chores? Grandma & Grandpa might include a little $$$ in a Birthday card or something? Why, by the time we were 10 to 12 many of us actually 'worked' doing things like picking strawberries, mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, or ??? Regardless of how, we had money, and as boys we always had something to spend in our pocket.
That's why, when the metal detecting hobby came long, from the mid-'60s and on into the early '80s there were a
lot of lost coins out there to be found. We lost them, just like those before us lost them, simply because it was a common thing for us to have and carry money and other metal pocket items. We also had more bigger-size playground and school equipment, such as taller swings, taller and longer metal slides. and bigger and taller sets of monkey bars and other climbing and dangle-from structures to enjoy.
Today most playgrounds are smaller, with shorter-size swing sets, and a lot of colorful plastic structures with short-length and unexciting slides, etc. Where the older playground equipment was used by kids of all ages, as well as adults, so much of what's out there today is geared for toddlers and smaller, younger kids. And to make it worse they just don't have or carry anything exciting to lose. Naturally we are going to find some locations that differ. Around the larger Portland, Oregon metro are the are a lot of terrible, low-use and low-productions parks and schools, but there are some, once found, that can be very good producers and see frequent use. Most of these sites in Utah fall into th not-so-great to very high-productive categories, once you find the better, bigger playgrounds. Appealing to all ages an see heavy use.
So far, although I've only been here in Texas for a month, I've driven into Abilene and visited half of their parks, none of which have been very rewarding. There are either some 'locals' who get in and clean them out quickly, or they just are not seeing much good-target loss as I would like to enjoy. The one small city park here in Clyde has been more productive than any two of those in Abilene, combined. And elementary schools, so far, have all been fenced in with no outside access, and while most of those look more exciting, they are not accessible, yet.
I guess ball fields are my next group of sites to hunt. One thing about Texas is thy love their outdoor sports and softball and baseball fields are everywhere. I know there was a time back when, that those locations filled my needs when I concentrated on them. Of course that was going after early-era left-overs and when I was a lot more mobile to dedicate ample time to hunt them. Also different the past 30-40 years is more folks using them are wearing uniforms, and those seem to be void or pockets or good stuff is left in their jeans or a vehicle.
Headed out at 7:10 this morning to visit some different areas, trying to find a good 'flash money' site or two. Places to hit in-between working private property 'permissions' that I am working on. Today's 'work tools' are a Silver Sabre µMAX w/6" Concentric, using minimum Disc. and full Sensitivity, as usual, and an Apex w/'Ripper' DD coil and my 'Custom' program of Disc. accepting '20' and above, full Sensitivity, Volume '8' and Iron Volume '2' and I start out in MF ... again, as usual.
It's 56°, cloudy, wind 14-22 mph and I also plan to check a renovation job I heard about yesterday. Who knows, like any of them I just might get lucky.
