Visual Target ID ... Use and Reliability.

Visual TID, depending on the make or model used, might be one or more of the following types:

▪︎ A needle-type meter where the needle swings to a position that might point at a likely-named target and/or a Number on a background scale.

▪︎A marked 'block' or 'segment' across the top of the visual display.

▪︎A word or image of a potential target for that TID range, like Iron, Foil, Nickel, Pull-Tab, Screw Cap, Penny, Dime, Quarter and so on.

▪︎A VDI (Visual Discrimination Indication) number that runs a scale from lower-conductivity to higher-conductivity.

▪︎ Many current TID models use a blend of two or three of these methods of information for their metal detector offerings.

QUESTIONS:

Do You:

#1.. Never use a visual Target ID.

#2.. Just periodically glance at the visual display.

#3.. Use it but base your recovery on the Audio response.

#4.. Always use TID to help make a Dig / No-Dig decision.

#5.. Rely on a TID 'lock-on' or you will not recover the target.

Monte's Answer:

With my non-display Tesoro's it is always #1.

With all other models that feature Target ID, it is usually #2, or sometimes #3 in some trashy environments.

#1is still what I use the most with any detector at any site.
