"There are times ..." is very true, and I use three methods to gain permission.

Letter writing is one of them. A long-gone detecting buddy and I tried the letter-writing method years ago and we found it to be far less successful than a direct door-knock approach. Yes, it is necessary and has worked at times when the property owner was not a local contact, but I'd much rather have direct, face-to-face communication with people to address the topic of gaining access.

We don't need to be in our "Sunday best," but we shouldn't look dirty, scruffy, or have dirty hands when we present ourself. Our timing is also important as we don't want to interrupt them at mealtime, or during some other important event such as preparing for a funeral or watching the Super Bowl. (Of course that could be the same thing if the Patriots meet their demise. grinning smiley)

My preference is to catch people outdoors where they might be caring for their lawn or garden or ??? And my other method, different from letter-writing or door knocking, is to do something that will catch the land-owner's attention and get them to approach me. That way I know I haven't interrupted anything they might be doing, and I have already gained their interest and commitment to conversation. My success rate has been higher with that method, a close second-best by knocking, and unless they live at a distance I never write a letter, for a few reasons.

Finding what works on accessing private property.

I agree 100% Rich, and knocking usually had better results than letter writing. N/T
