A trip to NV and controversy..................

May 11, 2019 07:33AM avatar
I opted not to go on the Ogden outing as it was primarily focused more on urban coin hunting than old ghost towns. Having the dogs and trying to keep track of them wandering the parks etc I chose to miss this one. ( the only one I have missed so far)

Kickindirt was going to Ogden but his daughter's softball tournament got scheduled that Sat. so he had to cancel. We got to talking and Kickindirt said I ought to come down here a few days to detect since he had the days off. It didn't take me much convincing, loaded the dogs and detectors up and headed to NV.

Day One we hunted some of the regular haunts and Kickendirt took me to a new site he calls "New Town" as it is the newest of the oldest sites.

By the end of the day, I managed an 1884 IH, 1917 & 29 Wheats, buttons and marbles. For me the best find for the day was an old brass Hotel Key FOB " The Columbia Hotel" Denver, CO. #428 If Carried Away Return Unsealed By Mail Postage 3 Cents

Day Two started off slow. I found a few buttons, suspender parts a Pocket watch chain and nice marble. Finally, towards the end of the day, I got a couple of Norton Bros Sheep ear tags. I love those things and that made my day.

Day Three I had a half day to detect then had to head home. Started the day with some old shell casing finds. Not much in the way of finds were happening. Walked over to Kickin dirt and chatted a minute. He already made a nice find. After chatting a bit I headed back to the area I found the shell casings, figuring if these easy targets haven't been found yet, maybe some good targets still layed buried in the ground.

About half way there I spotted a depression in the ground surrounded with lots trash, bricks etc etc. I put my coil ( Fors CoRe and oor coil) to the ground and started to detect and this is where the controversy starts. I was working really slow thru the trashy area and after a bit I spotted a dusty nickel size round disc about 3-4" ahead of the coil. I stopped looked at the disc then swept my coil over it, Sure enough I would get a Nickel reading. Before even touching it I hollored at Kickindirt and his son that were about 70 yrds away to come take a look. They came over took a look. Ran there coils over it. I figured I had a V Nickel, but to my surprise it turned out to be an 1867 Shield Nickel and in pretty nice shape at that. The nickel has turned brown over the years but the detail is nice and shows thru. So I have decided not to clean it with anything other than cleaning with a dry cloth and leaving it that way.

Then Kickendirt mentions, Too bad dude that ya spotted it ahead of the coil, you'll have to claim that as an eyeball find. I said but....but had I not seen it I would have advanced the last few inches and found it anyways with the detector giving the Fors CoRe the Credit. But he says " Sorry Dude, fate can be cruel at times LOL so we are going round and round whether its a detector find or eyeball find ????

To end the day before leaving I snagged a nice Eagle button.

Also D&P OR ( Del and Patsy) came down Thursday and were going to detect a few days. Detected with them on Thurs, but didn't see them on Friday.

As always it was a fun trip. Was good to see Kickindirt again.
