Gregg that reminds me of the time I brought my sifter. Spent a few hours sifting a area. Didn't find but a few small rivets and buttons. Then I took Ryans MMK with 5" coil and gridded a section next to the sifted area. Found a sheep ear tag with the MMK. Then I went over it with the Xp deus and found a 1854 dime. Just never know what lies beneath

That reminds me of circa 1963, when I built my first detector. Still can't find the plans I used, but I think it was from a Popular Electronics or Electronics Illustrated. Anyway, it was a BFO type, with a coil wound on a circular piece of plywood in the 8" dia. region. That was attached to an old broom stick handle. The transmitter was a simple oscillator, operating on the AM broadcast band. Next to the homebrew Tx you attached a transistor radio to the handle. You could listen to your favorite station, while hunting :-)

I lived in San Francisco at the time, and me and my buddy were all excited to try it in Golden Gate Park. GG Park is built on the sand that was 1/2 of S.F. to start with. My buddy brought along some chicken wire to sift with. He found several coins under benches and such, I found NOTHING ;-( Matter of fact, I don't remember finding anything with that 1st "detector" :-)

That detector operated between .55 and 1.6 MHz (that's Mega Hz, not Kilo Hz)! Very very high frequency - with virtually no ground penetration. Would of been good for small gold nuggets on top of the ground, but lo, there were none :-)

There are so many variables, we have to recognize that there is no 'perfect' in "The Real World."
