My shirt pocket metal detector ... and that was the lightweight part.

March 65 I built my first bfo detector, and like George, it was a BFO and had me wind about an 8in diameter coil. It also required a transistor radio as the receiver and I used my handy, small, cream - colored transistor radio that fit in my shirt pocket.

So I guess that old original metal detector was a couple steps ahead of our more recent detector designs that have that flat little control box you can slip off the rod and put in your pocket.

By late 65 I assembled my second detector which also used my already handy transistor radio. I recall detecting out in Gresham Oregon where I had the pleasure of listening to the World Series at the same time I was detecting. I was just a hundred yards or so show me a radio tower and the World Series was in the background but almost as loud has my motor boat tuned detector. Even our modern high-tech luxury machines don't provide that dual-purpose performance.

There are so many variables, we have to recognize that there is no 'perfect' in "The Real World."
