What is my Window of Expectation?

When I'm gauging the era of the OLDEST coins I expect to find at a given location, I usually subtract 20 years from the earliest date of habitation. It is possible that older coins were in circulation, as I occasionally still find a wheat penny in my change today. But it happens much less frequently. As a stats guy, you will recognize that the odds of finding a really old coin predating the first habitation get longer and longer as time marches on.

IHC's were made from 1859 to 1909. I think your idea of hunting the OLDER locations increase your odds of finding an IHC.

Thought to keep in mind is that a lot of people flat out miss IHC's due to where they show up on the target ID scale, right about where zinc pennies do. Of course in an old town type situation, we are generally digging all good conductive signals / targets.

Here's a post I made over on the DetectorProspector Forum last year. I was hunting with my Racer 2 at the time. The conversation was about skipping zinc pennies and consequently missing IHC's as well.

Hunting old homes from the turn of the century (1900's) is a good way to turn up IHC's. Sometimes you can find old neighborhoods where a large portion of the homes are from a given era. Both the yards, the parking strips and LOCAL PARKS will hold lost items going back to the same period. thumbs up

Good luck with your IHC. I hope I find one too.

It's YOU that makes the difference.

A Ghost Town "hunt factor" is a serious consideration. Been doing it since late 1968.
