Those planning on our 12th WTHO on June 3rd-6th/7th this year.

Read George's post above and look at the photo he attached. It does give us some thoughts to consider as to which of the townsites might hold the better rewards ... if we work a coil over them.

Every year I try to devote a little pre-hunt research time to learn more about each of the locations. More about the activity they had, and even check some population reports because I have found those do vary based on the source.

Ok, ok, I know it is a bit geeky, but I'm a numbers/spreadsheet kinda guy cool smiley

With the upcoming WTHO to Wells, I was trying to decide where I should concentrate my limited time. I came up with a "hunt factor". A real simple one. Maybe someone can add parameters to the equation. What I decided on was to multiply the peak population (best figures I had), by the number of years occupied.

Whatdya think?

I've re-thunk my approach for this year, at least now, to plan the order of towns I want to hunt, and where I hope to donate my time and effort at each of them. I can reflect back to the latter '80s working some of the old RR towns and from more recent years (our WTHO's since 2015) I have a better idea what detectors I'll mainly use for different areas of the towns. Those with dense iron vs fringe or more open areas with sparse targets.

My mobility stinks and I know that will limit the amount of travelling around on-site as well as my time to hunt, but the one thing in my favor is I'm already well practiced in working a place slowly-and-methodically. I do hope all interested participants devote some time to doing a little research. We have about 4½ months to do so before we have to be packing up to go search for some great 'keepers.'

I give a 'Thank You' once again to George for proving this post last year. A helpful 'nudge' for us to do more thinking.

A Ghost Town "hunt factor" is a serious consideration. Been doing it since late 1968.
