4-Months left to 'Be Prepared!'

February 03, 2020 10:36AM avatar
Here it is, Monday February 3rd and in just 4 months from now we'll be about to start our 12th WTHO.

George gave us some information in the initial thread post about some of the towns in Nevada, their populations and life-span. We still have time to read-up on anything we can find that might help us with some added information, or even a photo or two, of some of the places we can hunt.

I know that the number of people who have contacted me and plan to participate in this year's Outing is growing, and we're likely to have the biggest turn-out yet for an Outing. We have many former attendees, and some new folks coming as well to make it their 1st Get-Together. Word is that some are bringing their spouse, a son or daughter, another family member, or bringing a friend or two.

I have no doubt that at least one or two participants are coming along to find out what it's like to Relic Hunt a 'ghost town' we talk about, and their have only been involved in Urban Coin Hunting.eye popping smiley This could possibly be an eye-opening experience.

There is a lot of discarded trash in some sections of most of these old townsites, and it is difficult to learn how to best handle it. I've been detecting since March of '65 and working ghost towns since May of '69, and of all the challenging trash you might encounter, it is the assortment of Iron Nails that tend to be the most plentiful. For some people not used to dealing with Nails and similar wire-iron, like cut fence, etc., it takes a bit of patience to learn how to master hunting in dense iron contamination, but at least nails are easier to work with when making your own set of Test Samples. I encourage everyone not comfortable with taking on Nail infested sites to gather some up, a few coins of different size and denomination, and use them to do some practicing with your detector.

Oh, I did use the word 'patience, and that includes mastering a proper and functional search coils control and sweep speed. Do not scrub the ground. It can impair performance, a lot, and cause fatigue due to the friction of 'scrubbing' and interrupted sweep when encountering bumps and dips in the ground texture. Most User Manuals suggest keeping the search coil ±2" from the ground and I encourage everyone to do that. It also eliminates a lot of falsing, too.

It's also good to use a straight side-to-side sweep rather than a broad arc sweep, and to you advantages to keep the search coil closer to you and not extended way out in front. The coil should be worked about 12" to 18" ahead of your leading foot. I suggest a side-to-side sweep should only cover about 24" to 30" and not a long sweep. And they should be slow-and-methodical so that you overlap the prior sweep by about 75%, and make 2 to 3 side-to-side sweeps over the same sweep-route and not go one direction then advance the coil before going back the other way.

► So make sure you are familiar with any new-to-you detector as well as being 'comfortable' with a detector and coils you're already used to.

► Get some hunt time in to be ready and practice hunting in and around iron nails.

► This WTHO, some participants will be awarded prizes from random drawings at our Saturday Evening Dinner.

► Remember to book a room or RV spot soon. I'll be calling my reservation in today.

NOTE: I will be sending out an e-mail this evening to everyone on the WTHO Contact List. If you are inviting a friend or family member, please contact them and ask them to e-mail me their Contact Info (Name, Address, Phone, E-Mail) so I can get them on the WTHO Contact List so they can receive any updates.

I'll explain the prize system, and also ask for the T-Shirt size for each Participant.

The Outing is coming and I'm excited already!

A Ghost Town "hunt factor" is a serious consideration. Been doing it since late 1968.
