That said, it didn't take Gregg long to kneel down, make a recovery and make the walk back to where Bob and I were standing. "Does that look silver to you?" he asked. Good question. Does a Mercury dime look silver? the simple answer is "Yes". Oh, and then he comes walking back with another coin in hand. "Almost forgot to check the hole", he said with a big grin on his face. It was a '41 nickel. At least it wasn't a '42, so I didn't have to go through the silver question again. Well, then again, I guess war nickels aren't really silver are they? grinning smiley

LOL ..... ya, poor ol'OregonGregg is a bit slow in the head at times, In fact I am hard of hearing and just recently have had to start wearing glasses as well. So I meet all three criteria Deaf, dumb and blind. But in this instance, it was more of the "blind" than the dumb that got me.....I didn't have the proper glasses on to see anything up close. Realized I snagged a dime but couldn't tell what it was. Any silver will do, just hoping it wasn't a modern dime and thank you for verifying that it was indeed a silver dime grinning smiley Same as with the nickel....knew I had one but couldn't tell which variety thru the crust etc.

And yep ya can't count war nickels as silver. According to the powers that be, war nickels do not contain enough silver to be counted as a silver coin find. Should one try to claim a war nickel as "silver" is merely a desperation attempt to actually finding a true silver coin............
