Gregg found and Monte found.

Honestly, it was no different than any other detecting adventure because we can always learn something about a site, a detector, a coil, a recovery tool, etc., etc. A few days ago when we journeyed out to 'Rippville,' Gregg found a Trade Token. as well as a lot of 'could-have-beens.' You know, the non-ferrous targets that ring up as smallish and in a likely VDI range that could have been a coin or token, and sure sounded good or at least a decent 'iffy' signal you had to dig.

Those were all from a smaller areas that has been hunted by us and several others in the past, but Gregg mentioned at the time that there were a lot of potential target's in the area and it was good to work it slowly and methodically. It was an interesting day to get a start for the year because I was able to glance over that direction, several times, and still see Gregg working back-and-forth in a more contained area and not off one or two hundred yards in different directions. Gregg found a decent condition Token, other stuff, and 'found' something in what he 'learned.'

Me? In that trip I was using my Minelab Vanquish 540 to 'learn' more about what it can do, and to confirm some issues it has that bothered me. I needed to have that information so I could finish my write-up and description of what it was doing different in the default modes. I 'found' some confirmation in the circuitry design and errant behavior and related that in the letter when I sent the Vanquish to Minelab service department Monday morning. However, on the strong points I found, or learned, the V-540 has some very good in-the-field performance for some applications and makes a great 'cross-over' unit for modestly littered ghost town hunting.

Then on Monday's POW Camp hunting, Gregg moved back into the area where we know that's been a better potential area to find coins, especially Wheat-Back Cents. Not as many as we used to find in there, but they are still around even for a short hunt in a chilly wind.

I hunted closer to where we parked and where I pulled a few coins a year or two ago, but wanted to work it with my XP ORX w/5X9½ DD HF coil and check out two changes I made in one of my saved programs. The ORX VDI read-out design is different from most models I use so I was recovering more targets. One area had a lot of the rectangular Pry-Tabs that kept me busy because they had a VDI of '78' to '82', and that kept me hoping for a Wheat-Back, and it was well above where a Nickel coin would read.

So I found, or 'learned' more about the site challenges as well as more about the ORX. I also found it to be very comfortable for me and that extended the fatigue-free condition which is to my advantage. I also used the arm-band for the XP controller for the first time in a prolonged hunt and found that it was also comfortable, very handy, and eliminated the accidental nudging that knocks the control unit off the rod.

So we both had a good but short hunt for just a bit over an hour, and we both 'found' more than we started out with ... in finds and knowledge. Just wait until we finish a day's adventure and Monte has more keepers for "show-and-tell" than Gregg.winking smiley Why, that might even happen tomorrow, Wednesday, when we plan to revisit 'Rippville' Oregon. I'll have my four assigned Relic Hunting units along, the CoRe, Relic, ORX and Bandido Ii µMAX, and if all goes well it might be my turn to pluck the better keeper.
