Is my 800 finding the "stuff" left behind by 40-50 years of previous detectors and those using them? So far, Yes.

That would be an easy 'YES', I'm sure, because all of us have left stuff behind in years gone by. We didn't sweep directly over a target, or we were using too much Discrimination, or we didn't get a good enough signal to recover the target, didn't overlap and other reasons why we didn't find something. You could hunt a site using everything you have and then go in a couple of days later with the EQ-800 and quite probably. But you could re-hunt with the same detector you first used and find something. Stuff gets missed.

In my mind there are a few different types of missed;

1. Poor coverage by previous hunters. This would be the never got a coil over it type of miss. (easy target)

2. I didn't think to look there type of coverage. This would be like OregonGregg's large cent he turned up at a previous WTHO - There was a clump of waist high grass in the middle of an open area that was about 3' in diameter. you couldn't get a coil over the area due to the dense, tall grass. Gregg turned his coil on it's side and scanned around the perimeter of the clump and got what he thought was a good signal and had me come over and check it out. Yes, it was a good signal and turned out to be a very cool Large Cent. (seasoned detectorist)

3. Previous detectors went over it but weren't able to see it due to their technology OR were not able to detect a target due to the proximity of other metallic items both ferrous / non-ferrous or both. The newer / faster / better unmasking detectors were able to easily find this previously hidden / masked target. (better detector)

4. A target is co-located with iron junk that prevented previous detectorists from finding it. Yet when you went over it, there were clues a good target may be co-located, so you pursued. (hard target / seasoned detectorist) While hunting with Gregg and Zincoln up in Lonesome Arch, As a prank, they were attempting to hide a Indian Head Penny in a plastic display case in an area I was searching. The had written on the case in bright yellow marker; COINS DON'T SINK ! They successfully hid the case and I actually swung my coil over it and kept going. Stunned that I could be such a poor detectorists, they both swung their coils over the target and got . . . nothing. They had buried the prank IHC right on top of some big junk. It was eye opening for everybody.

5. Masking items were removed making targets accessible to a coil. Cleaning surface metallic trash away to open up an area. (seasoned detectorist)

6. Targets were at the limits or fringe of detecting capability. Difficult target was found due to knowledge and skill with one's detector. (hard target / seasoned detectorist)

Monte, there may be a few more "missed" scenarios that you can add here.

I think that as 'we' become better detectorists, we will find more of the difficult targets that were missed for other reasons than just poor coverage. thumbs up

It's YOU that makes the difference.
