Culling the Herd - Yes. ... but I think you Heard wrong.

I might be wrong but I think he is culling the herd to make room for a Tarsacci maybe ????

Does that taste anything like Tobasco saucie? I never use the stuff. I only have room for A1 or Hines 57.

As for "making room" in my Detector Outfit, that's another story, and it goes something like this:

Once upon a time there lived an old phart who really enjoyed metal detecting every spare moment of every single day. He really enjoyed learning all he could about all sorts of new makes and models that came along and touted magic abilities to do all sorts of mystical things. It took a lot of time, effort and patience to pick-and-choose the useful adjustment functions and separate them from some of the over-hyped and over-adjustable feature they offered, and over time he came to appreciate three important categories that a worthwhile detector ought to be able to provide without a lot of excess cost, excess adjustment features, or calling for a lot of excess time dedicated simply to 'tinkering'

As the years passed to decades the aging character had to confront limiting health issues which hampered his enjoyment of this great sport and cut those long-day hunts to a matter of only a few hours, and that was on the better days. Time came to finally realize there is only so much any detector can put out in performance, and once teamed up with an ideal search coil for some specific tasks, a savvy Avid Detectorist just settles in to enjoying a select few detectors that can check off all three categories and still provide ample 'fun' when getting out to enjoy the detecting sport.

Now in the closing years of enjoying this wonderful sport, he's comfortable to sit back on his spread with some of his favorite stock around him. He's selected the best-of-the-breed from different 'branded' stock to have his favorite stock around, and is 'thinning the herd' by culling out the few that have a bad attitude or don't provide the performance desired, or are just too high-maintenance.

Trimming the herd of three new / as-new / nearly new models to include a Minelab Equinox 800 w/11" and 6' coils, a Nokta Impact w/11" DD, 7" Concentric and 5" DD coils, and an XP ORX w/5X9½ DD HF coil will leave this character well-equipped with 8 devices in his Detector Outfit that all provide what's needed to satisfy the three desirable needs: To be 'Simple' to get into action,; provide ample adjustments that are 'Functional' and not move into the excess category; and all can provide the in-the-field 'Performance' desired to keep every detecting outing 'Fun' ... and that's how it ought to be.

Then, as he ages into his latter years, he finds that he doesn't make friends with, or get along well with, a lot of the newer upstarts but is very comfortable having his good friends around. The ones who speak his language and he can just relax with. The regular 'morning group' you might find gathered around in a corner at McDonalds on a typical day (when they are open) just enjoying their morning beverage and a simple and affordable breakfast. Talking about the latest news, or reflecting on their past. Enjoying the discussions of 'early days' and the 'fun' they have had in life.

And now, he's content to finish out his days of relaxation and enjoyment by sharing his time with his trusted fiends. The ones he knows well, gets along with, and enjoys their company. The FORS CoRe twins, one with an 'OOR' DD and the other with a mid-size 5X9½ DD. The relative, the Relic who whispers in iron littered places and works a 5" DD as handily as any. And their young relative, the Simplex + who appears to be handy and nimble, but needs to trim some weight from that big 11" DD to a more slender 'smaller-size' look

The two oldest friends who have been around for almost 33 years, the Bandido ii microMAX and Silver Sabre microMAX who each get around with their 6" Concentric coils to still be handy, are joined by a pair of talented newcomers who do make a good 'Fit' for the tasks he can still do.
All eight of them with a well-respected and proven 'brand' and combined they make a small herd, but a dependable herd. Now content, he's just thinning out a few he doesn't get along well with or just doesn't need, and there's definitely no room or some unknown upstart with a name like some sort of spicy meal-prep ingredient or a new name for an ice cream flavor.

Monte

PS: The pair of talented newcomers are my two Vanquish 540 Pro Pack models, with one wearing the 5X8 DD and the other the 9X12 DD for wide-open / sparse-target areas.
