There are lots of different environs to use various detectors.
If I'm going to a park to hunt, what am I taking? A Minelab. Why? The best Target ID at depth. Digging deep targets in a grassy environment? Do I reach for my ghost town machine with a small 5"-6" coil? No. Why? Ahhh, cuz if I'm searching for coin sized targets at maximum detector depths, I'll need a bigger coil in the optimum size for maximum depths. That means a coil in the 10.5" to 11" diameter size.
Can I find keepers in the park with my ghost town set up? Absolutely. There are coins out there masked by other metallic items that could be revealed with a small diameter coil. But then I wouldn't be deep coin hunting, I'd be masked coin hunting.
Coins aren't that deep Rich. Yes they are, I've dug them. There's a park I've hunted for many years that is nearly 140 years old. I have pictures of the old days, pictures of changes, newer pictures. Much of the park has been grassed since the beginning. Mowed and the clippings are left to compost. Leaves are mowed. There are lots of huge trees. Let's say that a years worth of composting grass and leaf droppings add up to 1/16 of an inch of dirt each year. How many years to add 1" to the ground above that coin? That's 16 years to add 1" of newly composted dirt.
This park has had sprinkler irrigation many years and the grass grows well. What if it is actually 1/8th inch instead of 1/16th? That's twice as fast, 1" of new dirt every 8 years. Let see, 120 years divided by 8 is 15. A coin lost in 1900 has lain there while 15" of dirt has accumulated on top of it.
In a wind swept ghost town out west, there is usually little vegetation to contribute to debris accumulating above items dropped on the ground. Many targets are actually on the surface. Is this the same situation as an old park? No. Then let's not treat them the same. I'm gonna need more than my ghost town set up if I'm going to try to reach the deepest targets at an old park.
What if I don't like using a deep coin setup with an 11" coil? Well, that's ok, it isn't everybodies cup of tea; neither is ghost town hunting, which can be very difficult especially when you get into the heaviest areas of tin and iron trash. Some don't enjoy that type of hunting either.
Thing is, if something isn't my cup of tea, I can learn to acquire the taste so I can enjoy success in a different endeavor, or I can keep doing things my same old way and pass on an opportunity at learning a different skill.
So when I show up at my favorite park, I can go about detecting several different ways based on conditions, my mood, and what I'm looking for. Maybe I get out my ghost town rig and go after coins or jewelry masked by other metallic items. maybe I put on my big coil and go after the deepies. Or maybe a mid-sized coil and go after items in a certain target ID range that may have been overlooked by previous hunters.
Now I've been browsing the forums for a good number of years, here's a good example of some Minelab success. And this isn't one time, he posts his hunt results every few weeks for years and years.
