Curious, are you working a Civil War 'era' site away from any of the typical CW conflict sites, or have you traveled off to the east a ways to hunt a new or different locations? I used to make similar finds, especially buttons and bullets and same-era coins still carried and used by people after the Civil War who had coats and jackets at my favorite location there in my home state. Likely some military travelers though the new townsite as well.
I nabbed a few around '79 thru '82, but when we got good detectors for ghost town hunting in mid-'83, my finds really increased. Most of the better CW 'Era' finds came out of there from '83 thru '92, and when we were moving and a bit short on $$$, I sold all my shoe boxes of CW Era finds to a couple of guys from Alabama who were working a swap meet near Portland, Oregon in December of '92. They paid me well for what I had, and I got the pleasure of finding it.
I hope you'll be able to get out a time or two again before winter puts a clamp on things.
