Remfire
When I got up this morning it was 37° and the wind was blowing hard, but by mid-morning the sun was shining bright, the wind had subsided, and it was 45°. This time of year that is a detecting day!
I was a little apprehensive about the first hunt of the year because New Years Eve day I had a pretty good hunt, and I don’t have many back to back successes. I returned to a military area where I had found several coins last year, parked the pickup and took off in a different direction. About 300 yards from the truck I remembered I had left my pistol in plain sight on the console. I knew I couldn’t leave it there while I was gone for a couple hours so I went back to move it, then took off again. Just a short ways beyond where I had turned around I got a good signal and a toe scuff brings a coin to light. It’s a . . . 1962 Memorial penny! Boy, this hunt is going downhill fast!
There aren’t many targets in this area so I was wandering among the sage and junipers, checking around all the stumps and looking for fire pits and ration cans. One of the first signals I got was a low TID double blip target and thinking it was on or near the surface, I experimented with different programs and frequencies before flipping a pretty nice 1935 Buffalo. I started circling this location and found a 1943s nickel, then three Merc dimes, a 1926,1935 and 1937. Things are definitely looking up!
I continued on, generally aiming toward a large stump 150 feet away and got a high loud signal under a small sagebush. It sounded like a can or a jar lid but a little lower TID, and I had been digging everything, hoping for a relic or GI’s personal item. I made a very careless Sampson shovel scoop (luckily no harm done) and the dry sandy plug fell apart, revealing two big white discs. My first thought was “poker chips?” but the quickly realized I was staring at two huge silver coins. Second thought “Barber halves?” then determined Lady Liberty was facing the wrong way!
I left them where they fell out of the plug and brushed off the dirt, then took a few pictures and a video, and called my wife, who the night before I had told I wanted to find a silver dollar in 2021. Then, since I was hunting alone, texts to many to brag of my good fortune.
I was using a Deus with an original 11” coil and using the ”Hot” program, but experimented with frequencies and programs.
Roger,
I have a huge favor to ask. . . Tonight - tell your wife that you want me to find some gold coins this year.
Thanks,
And a big congrats on the finds.
Rich
