Thanks for welcoming a newbie

I'm the one identified as Chuck from Indiana. Thanks to Monte, Gregg, and everyone who welcomed me and my sister to share this enjoyable adventure and learning experience. This is only the second time I've gotten to search a ghost town and it's certainly different that my other detecting adventures (coin detecting parks, schools, homesites and detecting for native gold). (I've been travelling the West since and just got home yesterday, which is why I'm late reporting.) Here's a short summary of my time in the Wells area 8th-12th June 2021:

Tuesday 8 June -- Met OregonGregg and UtahRich just off the I-80 exit and followed them to Cobre and Toano. I didn't hunt in Cobre but spent about 6 hours in Toano with Fisher F75 and 4"x6" (Fisher) concentric. Didn't find anything too exciting but certainly got some of the green scraped away from behind my ears. I mostly detected around the hotel foundation and from there over to the railroad tracks. Forgot my backpack there but Gregg rescued it the next day (thanks, Gregg!). Met several interesting people at dinner Tuesday evening.

Wednesday 9 June -- UtahRich generously led my sister and partner, Alaska Mike, and me out to Metropolis and showed us around. (Thanks, Rich!) I spent 5 hours detecting (again with the F75 and tiny concentric) at various spots. Found the Amusement Center on the 'other' road into the site and there got a Wheatie (still haven't inspected hard enough to find a date -- will report back later.)

Thursday 10 June -- super windy day and only got up to about 60F (beats 100+...) so needed sweatshirt and coat for much of the day. Switched to the ML Eqx 800 and 6" DD coil but wind made it hard to hear the softer hits. Hunted a foundation SE of the school -- almost to the intersecting road. (Many of you know the spot, I'm sure -- SW of what looks to have been a dump - hollowed out area with quite a bit of small and large iron trash.) Got a silver quarter signal which turned out to be a mounting bracket for a closet rod. sad smiley Later on the road between school and hotel I got a very good sounding/ID'ing half dollar signal which was something off of a vehicle (and not too deep, so recent) -- right size but wrong composition.... Went back to the Amusement center but no luck there in the gales.

Friday morning 11 June -- back to the Amusement center, road side of the foundation where I had found the Wheatie I used a magnetic rake to clear iron and dead branches, etc. Found a few more non-ferrous in ~1.5 hrs before heading out to Tobar. I feel confident there are more coins there, between the nails, etc.

Friday afternoon 11 June and Saturday 12 June -- took the wrong road to Tobar (don't believe smartphone mapping software! Wish I had asked Gregg for directions) but still found it. Searched around the train depot and thought I got an old crusty penny but turned out to be a Zincoln -- very disappointing. Hunted about 3 hours there on Friday. Tom from AZ and UtahMike showed up Saturday and spent some time with us. I found a child's copper ring with (likely artificial) stone at the depot with the ML Eqx 800 and 11" coil. I searched around the old foundation Saturday at the intersection of the 3/4/5? roads but nothing found worth reporting.

Summary: we were camping out at both Metropolis and Tobar so missed seeing most of the group who concentrated on Cobre and Toano while staying at hotels in town. My sister found a 1929 NV license plate at Metropolis and large round RR sign (yellow with red '50' in the middle) at Tobar. She doesn't mind digging the large tagets! (She reburied the RR sign and would like to get the license plate back to Metropolis where it belongs.) I really bonded with the F75 and tiny coil (just got it this Spring) which worked well in the thick trash. The Eqx 800 did fine (with both coils) where the trash wasn't as plentiful. I'll just add that although I'm sure goodies were easier to find in past years, there are still good finds awaiting for those with the patience to use small coils, go slowly and listen carefully. I hope to get back there someday, and especially meet up with you (plural) there or elsewhere. In particular thanks to Gregg for taking me under his wing and making sure I was aware of get-togethers, etc. and ensured I was able to get to all four sites.
