When I sometimes read "only dig when you get a consistent response from multiple directions" I cringe. Sure, the clean hits which occur with no nearby trash and perfect coin orientation will show that. But if a person makes that a requirement they are going to leave some good and otherwise recoverable targets in the ground. (And I think this applies to both DD and concentric, although my experience with the latter is considerably less.)
Audio - - - from the earliest start of metal detectors for recreational purposes, the one thing we have always relied on is hearing an Audio Response. Needles, VDI displays, etc., are added things, but the audio is #1.
Coil too close to a metal target and we can get double or multiple beeps in one direction as we sweep across a target. Just need to raise the coil as it was too close to function properly..
No interference or masking from a nearby metal and we will usually get the anticipated Beep-Beep from one sweep to the next reverse sweep.
One audio beep? Dig it and find out because too many things can mask target detection response from one direction leaving us with only a single audio response. I always recover them.
