I tagged along with Rimfire for my first group hunt. Our first day's hunt was the ghost town of Toano. The amount of general trash was more than I was used to detecting in but the glass from that time was very interesting to wander through and dream of finding some of it unbroken. I did manage to find a 1911 barber dime which was a bit disappointing based on the age of the other coins found at the site...but a barber dime is better than nothing.
Day two we hit Shafter and I managed a 1925 buffalo in very poor condition. We spent the afternoon of day 2 back at Toano... no other goodies that day.
Day three...the windy one was a bit different. We started in Deeth where I picked up a 1920 something wheat penny. The second half of the day was along the tracks in an interesting area that Roger had found during earlier visits. Some cool relics were found mostly by Roger.
On Saturday the final one instead of the usual beating the ghost towns like they owed me money I hit my maps and did what I love almost more than detecting...research. I located a couple of interesting prospects along the railroad lines and talked Roger into giving them a try. We could not get into the first one but did manage to locate and hunt site 2. It was a beautiful day with no wind and cool hunting temperatures. The site was very old with enough targets to be fun and figure out what was going on at the site. At about 9:30 I got a signal that I thought was another shotgun base. I cut a plug and turned it over. The glint of gold raised the hair on the back of my neck. I sat down and carefully freed the coin from the soil. Date 1850. Denomination $2 1/2-dollar quarter eagle Type 1 New Orleans mint. Needless to say, my trip was made. The Wells area is not hunted out if you take your time and do some research which goes for any place that has history. Thanks again Monty for putting the event together. It was a lot of fun meeting all the other detectorists. I look forward to the next outing.
