Last night I did some digging in the back yard, my house was built in 1938 and before that it was just woods here. There must have been a big shade tree, or some other reason for the people to stop and congregate around a very small section of my yard in the mid to late 1800s. The main road into town would be in my front yard about 100' from this small spot. I have dug a few indian head pennies from the 1880s and two sterling rings (unmarked) from the period and last night I dug this bar chip, from a bar in Whales. All these digs are from a small 25' round section of lawn. The rest of my yard finds are period to the house. The owner or licensee of the bar was R.D. Watkins from 1876-1800, just a small window there. The pub is still in operation. A similar token sold recently for about $15.
