Monte, these are my detectors that pass the test all ways, coin in position #1 or #2:

Equinox 800 (6" coil)

Apex (5" Sharp, or 6-1/2x3-1/2" Snake coil)

Position #2, direction 4 is the toughest, the positive response is narrow and the coils must be hovered over the penny just right.

I sure wish Garrett would have made one of the 4½" Concentric coils for the Apex, but they didn't. I got a first NEL 5" Sharp in and it worked. I never invested in the Snake coil because what I had, with the NEL 5" DD, gave me the performance I wanted.
