PARTICIPANT'S REPORTS .... The 5th WTHO is now in-the-books!

May 27, 2017 04:49PM avatar
I joined the group Thursday afternoon in Cobre and had a chance to renew acquaintances and meet some new folks. Picked up a penny that momentarily bumped my heart rate until I saw the 1968 date on it. Time went by quickly and before I knew it everybody decided to call it a day and head back towards Wells. With the snow and cool weather, I passed on bringing the tent and took up residence for the outing at the Motel 6 with several others.

Friday, I headed out to Metropolis with several others. While wandering about the sagebrush with my Racer 2 with the stock coil, I picked up a 1904 V Nickel that a sharpshooter tagged long ago, the bullet strike likely carrying the coin off into the grasses and brush never to be recovered. There were plenty of bullets and cartridge casings from eras old and new. The open area I was hunting had little tin and trash making the stock coil a good choice for covering a good amount of desert. Too, the longer nose of the stock coil helped in poking up under overhanging sagebrush looking for items missed by previous visitors.

After lunch, with good finds being slow, we decided to have a go at Tobar, about an hour away to the south. I decided to give one of the trash laden areas a go and swapped out the stock coil with a 5" CORS Point. The Racer 2 did well with it and I spent a couple hours creeping through the densely packed iron trash. I picked up several old buttons, including a nice US military cuff button. As a veteran urban coinshooter of more years that I care to admit, I've typically passed on HEAVILY trashed areas if for no other reason than to avoid a massive headache. In truth, hunting these areas becomes a battle of patience and determination. I have to admit I was pleased to turn up the cuff button from the sea of nails and trash. I was hoping for a token or perhaps a coin, but neither surfaced. The Racer 2 and 5" coil are a good combo. The day came to an end and I headed back towards town, but not before picking up a couple Hemingray glass insulators that I spotted from the road. These are a special treat for me as I work for the telephone company.

The sun rose on Saturday and it was off to the Cobre / Toano area for me. Others selected likewise. I settled on an area I hadn't tried before. I started with the stock coil in the sagebrush and quickly had to swap out to the 5" due to the tin and trash. More bullets, casings and shotgun hulls. I moved further west as I hunted and the trash quickly dissipated. But the area looked interesting so I swapped back to the stock coil to cover more ground. After an hour, I stumbled on several old LEVI STRAUS pant buttons and rivets under some sagebrush. An old pair of pants must have come to rest there. I searched carefully, hoping that a coin or token might have been left in a pocket, but nothing else came to light other than the buttons and rivets. It was time for a change, so I headed up the road to see if I could find Toano.

A few of the group were already on the outskirts of Toano hunting where the weeds weren't as prevalent, After parking the truck, I grabbed the Racer 2 with the stock coil and headed out into the open outskirts. The stock coil did well and I turned up a couple smaller caliber round balls as well as bullets, casings and a few odds and ends. The larger coil and higher sensitivity allowed me to sweep above grass, brush and such yet still get respectable depth for targets hiding beneath them.

An early afternoon thunderstorm finally ended my hunt in Toano. I was warned the road becomes a muddy mess with any rain so I headed back down the hill towards Cobre and the main group where we waited as the thunder and lightning storm passed over.

The last day of the weekend for me was back to Metropolis. The rainstorm from Saturday has pretty well saturated the desert and there were some large and deep mud holes around the old town. I hunted along the edge of the road near the old school for a while with the Racer 2 and the stock coil. Lots of .45 ACP casings and bullets, bits of tin. I switched to the 5" coil and moved in close to the old school. The local wildlife was out and about after the rain from the previous day, I watched a large 6' snake wind its' way through the concrete and sagebrush looking for a ground squirrel for breakfast. It was tan with brown diamonds down the back but had no rattles or viper shape to the head. Reminded me of an extra large corn snake. He was obviously making a good living keeping the squirrels around the remnants of the old school in check and finally ducked under one of the large pieces of concrete fallen from the old building. No keepers came to light.

I moved again down near the old hotel and poked around for another hour. Nothing but a couple ticks that thought they had a free ride. Checking my watch, it was time for me to begin the drive home.

I had a great time at the different ghosts towns and meeting some new people. Looking forward to the next WTHO that I can attend.

Another thanks to Monte for putting this together.
