What an awesome trip! I'm ready to go back already!

June 13, 2017 11:52AM
I had a great time last weekend. It was very nice to meet up with those I'd detected with before, and meet a few new people as well. The weather was great, the scenery was amazing, and the sites were full of history! I really couldn't have asked for more (except a coin or two) and the trip exceeded my expectations! Thank you Monte, Monte Jr and Gregg for putting this outing together, sharing your sites, and inviting us all.

My trip started very early Thursday morning, flying onto to Boise from Las Vegas. Summer has already started for us in the desert of southern Nevada (Supposed to be 111 degrees on Saturday), so the cool mountain weather was a nice break. After arriving in Boise, I rented a car and drove 2.5 hours up into the mountains before I reached Lonesome Arch. I detected there for a few hours Thursday Afternoon. I found a few items of interest that first day, namely a two pronged buckle dated 1860 and an old rusty meat cleaver. After detecting a bit in Lonesome Arch, I stopped for a few minutes in Lonetree, before heading back to Ontario for the night. I took a different route back to Ontario than I came in on, making somewhat of a loop. The drive back was so beautiful, I almost wanted to fly fish the creek the rest of the weekend, rather than detect. (I said almost)

So Friday morning I headed back up, taking the same route as the night before. I arrived in Lonetree to find most everyone already detecting, and to hear that a 1836 Capped bust dime had been found the night before! I detected Lonetree the entire day Friday. I covered a lot of ground that day using the XP Deus the first half and my Fisher f19 the second half. I found a lot of interesting items, including my first (and then second) ever oxen shoe, an old rim fire shell casing, lots of crudely forged iron pieces of mining history, a few underwear buttons, tons of tin and square nails. Lonetree is definitely an interesting site. I really enjoyed the scenery here, and being able to watch the distant storm clouds roll in over the mountain ranges. Its exciting to be at a site so old, where the inhabitants had so little, and still be able to find stuff. Towards the end of the day on Friday, I thought I'd head back over to Lonesome arch and see how everyone else was doing. When I got there, everyone else had left, so I spent an hour or two by myself just wandering. The birds were singing, storm clouds continued rolling through, and the wild rose bushes planted so many years ago were blooming such a brilliant yellow, the pictures truly do not do them justice. Just before I left Lonesome arch I visited the surprisingly well maintained cemetery. I walked through reading the names and dates of the people who lived and died there. Some lived very full lives, others weren't so lucky. The Diven family who lost four kids all in a week around Christmas, 1877 really hit me hard.

Saturday I detected Lonesome Arch all day. What a beautiful site for a town. Again, I divided my detecting time between the XP Deus and the F19. I covered a lot of ground around the town, and found some very interesting finds. A few more buttons, an old safety pin, a drawer pull, and a beautiful Rosette design piece I think came off a horse bridle. Of course there was more rusty tin cans and square nails too. I did find one nice stag tobacco tin with the paint still intact. I accidently pierced it right through the middle with my pick, and it was covered in ants, so I left it be.

Saturday evening was the picnic dinner at the Vale city Park. Had a great time chatting with everyone and seeing their finds from the weekend. There were some amazing finds, including chinese cash coins, seated dimes, the 1836 capped bust dime, a civil war era eagle buckle, a tiny little turtle shaped charm, and much more.

Sunday most of us met over at Cow Hollow park. It was a CCC camp in the 1930s and a Japanese internment camp in the 1940s. There was a lot of can slaw about, but finds were still made. My only find of interest was a 1954 Wheat Cent . I really enjoyed detecting with everyone and chatting with Monte. Thanks Monte for going over a few of your machines, settings, and nailboard tests. At noon, I left to fly back home to the desert. I got home late but its was nice to see my family again. Thanks again to everyone for making this trip such an epic adventure. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Hope to see you all at the next outing!
