My wife and I went to eastern Oregon a couple of weeks ago for a family get together dinner. Doing some research of the trip I located an old town site. Driving down the dirt road to the site my wife said there are some big metal pieces on her side of the road in the sage not wanting to stop I drove on to the town site. No luck, town was not at coordinates. Driving back down the road to find the big pieces of metal, they were actually two model T fenders; there was also a concrete foundation and some cans. Finding only a Fletchers castoria bottle. It was made in Charleston West Virginia in January 1918.
Doing more research on this spot, turns out it was a school a half a mile from what was supposed to be the town site. Armed with information Paul and I headed out last Saturday morning early, yielding me a1917S penny and Paul a 1917S penny 5 minutes later. Then the next coin for me was a 1912S dime in perfect condition; later a Buck 110 pocket knife next to a tree from a recent loss. Paul finished out with finds of pennies in an area 1918S, 1913S, and a burnt no date penny. A pocket watch, a crushed thimble, small baby spoon, sterling doo-dad cup, and what we believe is a gold broche he will acid test it to be sure.
We sure enjoyed our trip even though it is quite smokey.
