Yes, the VX3 is an 'interesting' detector.

I had one and preferred it over the V3i, but I also did my best to get over it's shortcomings and ended up parting with it because I was doing better overall, working them side-by-side for comparison, with most of the other detectors I owned and used at the time. Those included the White's XLT, XL Pro, MXT Pro, MX-5, Teknetics Omega 8000 V4, the T2 w/5" DD coil, and in most of the iron debris sites either my Tesoro Bandido II µMAX or Silver Sabre µMAX.

With the VX3 I preferred the 6½" and open-frame 9" Concentric coils, but the hesitation required before reversing the coil sweep direction, the bit of lag time, and the fact it didn't GB as quickly or as smoothly as the MXT Pro were annoying. It called for a more deliberate or controlled sweep speed compared with the rest, too.

But, if he's mainly using just one detector and puts in the time to get comfortable with it, then I wish him all the best.
