Coin size, "density" (thickness), and let's not forget CONDUCTIVITY and operating frequency.

And we can add to that the variance from one unit to the next of the same model from Tesoro, and other makers back when circuitry design could use sloppier-tolerance components. As a Tesoro Dealer I always checked every unit that came in and if I found a 'hot' unit, it became mine and the one it replaced became a pristine condition used unit. Some are just better than others, and there were differences between similar search coils, and finally we can't forget to make sure the Ground Balance being set for peak performance.

I have two Silver Sabre microMAX units and each, like my other Tesoro's, keeps a 6" Concentric coil mounted. One is for day-to-day use, and the other is pristine and stays in my wall display. It's also the 'hot' unit and will match or usually out-perform my current two Bandido II microMAX devices as well as the last 5 of those I have had, all using the 6" Concentric coil. It's just a sparky Silver Sabre microMAX. I've also swapped all of the 6" coils around to check for any weaker-performing coils, and regardless that SS microMAX is still the impressive one.

No, not by an inch or two, but just sparkier on the deepest targets or gently hitting on those just out-of-reach for the others.

Plus the 10 kHz to 12 kHz Tesoro's, like many comparable detectors in a similar frequency range, tend to be more responsive to the lower-conductive US 5ยข coins..

And hombre, like you, I do find some deeper-located targets at honest deep depths, but that's usually using the quality headphones I rely on AND listening for the 'ticky' or 'fringe-area' audio responses and not anticipating a loud or pronounced 'beep!'

I'm curious, have you tried the thin and light 6" Concentric?
