Yes, the Audio Tone level on the CoRe is selectable. When they made the prototype to become the Relic, they used the CoRe's level '3' and both Keith Southern & I agreed that it should changed to '5' of the CoRe. They did, and they also made a little change to the VCO to calm it down a little. Then produced the FORS Relic.
With the CoRe, you don't have a lot of user adjustments, and that keeps folks from messing things up, and I can assure you, there are many detectors with a lot of adjustable tweaking features that can easily get skewed out-of-whack Sometimes adjust one function and you have to counter-adjust something else. That goes back to why I have, for many decades, favored detectors that fit my Main-Three Criteria, and that is: 'Simple' .. 'Functional' .. 'Performance-Based.'
The CoRe was thought out and based on some proven performance design, it was kept 'simple' so as to basically be a turn-on-and-hunt design. The controls are also 'simple'; or 'basic-needs' functions, and the end result can be very good in-the-field performance. Just keep the Discrimination fairly low, and my suggestion is set it at '10' so you'll hear most Iron Nails, and use the highest Sensitivity level you can w/o EMI noise. I also suggest you use the smaller
'OOR' DD coil for the very trashy sites those old ghost towns often present us with, and hunt in a slow-and-methodical manner.
By methodical that means to not make wide-ranging sweeps, but keep them rom about 24" to 30" from side-to-side. If you push it to 36"-40", don't make them too fast of a sweep. Overlap, and concentrate on more of a gridded area rather than roaming allover the place. These aren't just suggestions for you, Joel, but for anyone using a CoRe, relic or other comparable device to hunt around dense iron contaminated sites and cover all areas where it has sagebrush or other plant growth so you can work in and around the brush.
The CoRe has a very good audio report, too, and that makes it enjoyable you use. I've experienced quite a few detectors that have a 'tinny' or annoying audio, but the CoRe hs one of the better audio response and reporting systems I've enjoyed using.
Let us know how things go as you put in some time learning that detector.
