It could be too late if upon initial purchase the detector falls out of favor with you and is sold.

The huge advantage to a detector having the ability to "UPDATE" the software is that additional features can be added and software glitches / bugs can be fixed at home RATHER THAN shipping your detector to the factory at significant cost and loss of use while away.

As an owner, you are not obligated to update from whatever software version you have to the latest greatest. And the updates I've seen out there allow you to go back to a previous version if you want.

win / win / win

The disadvantage to software updates - they typically require you to have a computer and internet connection. Sometimes they require a specific type of Operating System software like Windows. And they require the person doing the update to have a base understanding of following the instructions.
