Wonky Ground Balance and Fold Over.....

Randy, great write-up. I was wondering if you could explain the symptoms of "fold back" while ground balancing, and how to know when you have the signal balance turned up too high for the ground you're in. As you know, yn the XL Pro, you can turn up the signal balance too high and lose depth, especially once you get past 2 or 3 o'clock on the control. I just back it off once it starts getting chattery, but maybe I'm still setting it to high and don't know it?

Hi Darren: I hunt in G.E.B. Disc. mode and use the trigger pulled Normal (pinpoint) all metal to check ground response...

With the coil raised about 10 inches & parallel to the ground, bob the coil up and down to about an inch above the ground...

I'll try to be brief, there are 3 commonly known Threshold audio responses when checking Ground Balance in the Normal All metal mode.

(1)Negative response...when coil gets close to the ground, the Threshold audio goes silent, GB needs to be adjusted to be more positive.

(2)Neutral response...When coil gets close to the ground, the Threshold audio stays at the same level, most run their GB a little + or - from this 'spot on' adjustment.

(3)Positive response...When the coil gets close to the ground, the Threshold audio gets noticeably louder, GB needs to be adjusted towards the negative to be spot on or slightly + or - according to your particular metal detector and ground.

But wait..you mention "fold back" ...I think you meant "fold over" which is the (4th) response. I was conversing with Monte over the phone about this phenomenon and he feels that few metal detectors would do this. I know that my White's 5900 CB will accomplish it and it relates to a 'hot Signal Balance adjustment (Pre-Amp Gain). You saw this in person when you visited me 6 years ago. BTW we had a blast back then... lol...

(4) Fold Over response:..When the coil gets 'closer' at about 5 or 6 inches from ground, the Threshold goes positive and then blares louder as coil gets close to the ground...then about one inch from the ground and held steady at that position the Threshold goes silent (null) after a short time it sometimes returns. This happens when the Signal Balance adjustment is too high or ground mineral is high or Both. The Cure is to reduce the Signal Balance accordingly and readjust GB...Hope this helps some.

Randy

Wayfarer, a little added comment about 'Fold-Over' and Signal Balance.

If you have the 6000 Pro XL / XL Pro Instruction Manual, refer to this.

Two very good models you've added, and a wise decision.
