I agree about the "2nd effort" of Troy Custom Detectors.

I'm pretty certain NWCindy is referring to the 'original Shadow X2. Those were very functional, with a proper Ground Balance, and it is a very proven circuitry, too, since it is nothing more than a gently tweaked Silver Sabre microMAX with the Threshold changed to an internal trimmer and an added "Coin Check' button in place. An interesting concept to try and deal with the USA's modern and lower-conductive Zinc Cent, but for all practical hunting purposes it made the Shadow X2 less functional for all-purpose hunting.

Plus, since it was made by Tesoro to compete with a comparable Tesoro model, it resulted in the Shadow X2 being priced higher. The next Troy Custom experience was getting an outside design engineer to help create a product that was then farmed out to Fisher to assemble. Naturally, that ended up resulting in the two models being priced higher than their competitor's products, and I also found the Shadow X5 to be sort-of OK ... but also NOT and OK model, for me, because most of my Relic Hunting sites are loaded with nails and other dense saturations of ferrous-based debris. Plus they are in very mineralized environments.

The Discrimination had some issues, and adjusting the Disc. level often shifted the Ground Balance setting and that, too, called for extra adjustments afield. I am a Tesoro fan and knew the Shadow X2 was good, just extra pricy, and I was hoping the Shadow X5 would turn out to be a better engineered model with better operator control. I really tried to like it more, but even after conversations with Troy I just never grew comfortable with it in the long run, and had too many other detectors that clearly out-performed the Shadow X5.

But I can see why Cindy is fine hanging on to a Shadow X2, especially since it is simple.

Cindy, a good Tesoro-built model should not be overlooked.
