"Monte's stories from the early days .... his Shield Nickel Count, ..."

No, it was only better than the Buffalo Nickel count since 1983.

In the latter '60s and until mid-'83 I found a random Shield Nickel and did OK on 'V's, but Buffalo Nickels from parks and schools, parking strips and easements, old picnic resorts, private yards, etc., were easy prey. I found a lot of Buffalo Nickels early on, but from about '78 to '83 the numbers were declining as so many open public places had been hunted.

Then, in July of '83, I got a slow-motion/quick-response Tesoro Inca when they were released, swapped the 7" coil from my Mayan to the Inca, and my old site hunting moved into the #1 spot to spend my time. I started finding many 'V' Nickels and Shield Nickels and hardly any Buffalo Nickels. And my reference to the number of 'V's and Shield's usually is associated with the countless times I spent hunting my all-time favorite ghost town I named 'Twin Flats' where I filled four binders of carded old coins. Hundreds of oldies found, and the ration there was about 3 Shield Nickels for every 5 'V' Nickels.

I also did better on Seated Liberty Coins of various denominations compared with Barber coins at the ratio of about 30 Seated Liberties for every 5 Barbers. Long, long days of hunting. Some camping-out outings where I hunted daytime and nights in the heat of the summer. Old coin production started to trail off after the latter '90s, but I still had 4 or 5 coin-days into 2009.

From 'mid-'83 to late '08, 'Twin Flats' gave up: Large Cent, Flying Eagle Cent, Indian Head Cents, several 2¢ pieces, some 3¢ pieces, a Capped Bust Half-Dime from 1836, a lot of Seated Liberty Half-Dimes, Shield Nickels, 'V' Nickels, Seated Liberty Dimes (especially), and a fair number of Barber Dimes, Seated Liberty and Barber Quarters and Seated Liberty Half Dollars.

On my very first hunt at 'Twin Flats', the day I re-named it on May 4th 1969, I found my first Wheat-back Cent from 1927, and since that time I only found 8 more Wheaties, and 7 of those were stuck together as if in a stack about 2001. No Buffalo's, No Mercury Dimes or Standing Liberty or Washington Quarters, and no Walking Liberty Halves. Just the more enjoyable older era coins. But it was a 5/3 'V'/Shield ratio as best I could figure.
