"All other coins ... are subject to the laws of physics." .. YEP!

And physics covers the topic / subject of DISPLACEMENT which is what caused the fluid state of water to get out of the way of an object that is a solid form and heavier. Without outside force or pressure, solid objects will come to rest when they encounter another solid object or solid surface or substance (such as dirt, rocks, a tree root, cement, etc., etc.). Such an event eliminates porosity or fluid state behavior and 'sinking' doesn't occur.

It's just a natural occurrence. If dirt is loosened or moves for some reason, then it might move sufficiently to allow displacement of an object that is on or over it.

If a coin, for example is lost and after time is just slightly underground and a tree root grows, when smaller, over the coin, then as time progresses and the root grows, it can push the coin and other objects deeper below the ground level, but that's also not 'sinking' but is part of being 'Displaced' and is similar to a high-traffic area that can also cause force to disrupt the terrain and push a coin or other solid object deeper in softer or looser ground ... for the same reason.
