Hey Monte,

Taking a step back . . . doesn't always mean a step back in performance, just a step back in time.

Funny, as we were talking a day or two ago about the old TR Discriminators still doing their thing well, YET, the interest in the detecting community is for the newest features like improved target separation, ever-more-accurate target ID, iron audio, depth - depth and more depth, water resistance, and so forth.

Could be fun to have a 'retro' day out at the WTHO and see if OLD TECH can find anything.

Sometimes it is just fun to grab an old tried and true detector and have an afternoon of detecting.


Yes, some of those older, older models can show their abilities in tough conditions, but it was thanks to Ground Balance to search in a VLF All Metal mode, and then the coming of slow-motion GB-Disc. in '83 that had quick-response and fast-recovery that really brought us a marked improvement in performance and ease-of-use. Two or three times a year I'll take an old Compass TR or Garrett TR-Disc. out for a little detecting just for fun. That's 'old school.'

But on every trip I make, through the years to the present, I also have at least one Tesoro along and often also I've had a modified White's Classic ID or IDX Pro, just to enjoy the performance they can provide, and do so with a single-tone detector. All of them work quite well in a lot of nails and other ghost town debris, keeping a 6" Concentric on a Tesoro and 6½" Concentric on a White's.

I think it would be fun to have a 'Retro-Day' or at least a 'Retro-Experience' on the WTHO this June. For that I'd consider any basic Tesoro or Classic model to be 'Retro' enough and then those older models such as a TR, TR-Disc. or a VLF / TR-Disc. I encourage anyone who uses one of those to bring it along and I'll have two or three that I can try to fit in the vehicle. At anytime, if someone wants to experience a fun hunt, and just maybe a rewarding hunt, using an 'old fashioned' detector to all the high-tech and multi-featured new stuff, they will be welcome to.
