Will there be anything new ... and useful ... from White's ...

February 28, 2020 07:04AM avatar
.. in time to make our 12th WTHO in Nevada starting June 3rd? Something new in physical packaging and circuitry design concept that would make a good performer in dense Iron Nails, Rusty Tin and other challenging conditions we face?

I just posted this topic on the FTP and Garrett Forums because I thought we might have seen something in the way of a more useful detector to compete with the current market that is well represented by foreign detector manufacturers.

Trying to figure out the White's thinking gets puzzling. Personally, I think they only have two worthy models in their entire line-up to compete with the market today of "General Purpose" detectors on the market. Those are the land-based MX-7 which is an off-shoot of their waterproof MX-Sport. Good features, decent retail price, and they work okay. Other models are over-featured, over-size and heavier, and over-priced, such as the MXT All-Pro.

They did use the MX-7's very good physical package to make a Gold Nugget Hunting 24K, and then recently took that and repackaged it into a waterproofed GMX Sport, but that's a specific niche market. Their lower end models are terrible. Their higher end models really are not that great and are over-priced for what the trend has been for the past five or six years.

Let's face it, the good old days of beginners buying anything affordable and going out to find a lot of coins is over. We don't have the quantity of coins left in the popular public places because many of us who started a while back to long long-ago found them, or at least the bulk of them. Yes, there are still coins out there to be found, but far, far fewer, and most playgrounds and parks and old picnic groves and similar sites just are not being used much anymore. To make it worse, so many kids today don't have any money in their pocket to get lost in the first place.

There are the 'specialty' markets of Gold Nugget Hunting and Beach Hunting that might call for a 'specialty' detector, but .... the bulk of the Metal Det6ecting Industry, world-wide, is made up of more devoted consumers who get out Relic Hunting. That includes working the old ghost towns and similar places here in the USA, such as on most of our Outings, as well as hunting out-of-the-way or overlooked urban areas, such as vacant lots, renovation sites. structure tear-downs, and such. Also, watch any of the foreign-based You Tube videos and you'll see they hunt wide open pastureland and plowed fields or sometimes in the woods. Not a local grassy park or tot-lot. More "Relic Hunting" type applications and not a citified Coin Hunting approach.

And the surge in metal detector interest in the past five years has really been towards the Turkey-built Nokta / Makro devices of which they have many models, the France-made XP Deus and ORX, or the Australian-based MInelab who has made a devoted effort to lighter and better balanced and featured models, at affordable prices, with the Equinox and Vanquish series. Matter-of-fact, other than my two favorite models from the now defunct Tesoro, the rest of my Regular-Use Detector Outfit is made up with models from Nokta / Makro (4), XP (2), and Minelab (2).

The oldest metal detecting companies in the industry, all US based being Fisher, Garrett and White's, either have to be working hard to create something new and desirable and affordable ... or have let their employees know to start planning on retirement. I really wonder who's running the show at White's, and who might be a lead engineer trying to develop a new product or two.

From them, and the other two makers, I really would think we would see a new springtime introduction of a detector that might be of interest to me and most of the readers of the AHRPS Forums and other Avid Detectorists. Something that would be worthy to take to the upcoming annual Outing and be of interest to others and demonstrate good in-the-field performance. Any thoughts?
