Fixing and making, basic education to technical education.

March 1965: ... I could pop the hood on my '52 Buick Special and do a 'tune-up' on the straight 8. Just needed 8 spark plugs, cap, rotor and simple tools. Had to replace spark plug wires if they were worn. Not a difficult task for a savvy HS Sophomore.

I also took the 'Kit' my brother bought and, with a soldering iron and a few simple tools, I made a search coil and assembled the parts to fashion my first Metal ./ Mineral Locator. Not a difficult task for the same HS Sophomore.

Two months later I turned 16, and bought a '49 Chevy on my 16th birthday. Didn't like the "Three-on-a-Tree" manual transmission so in a couple of months, summertime, I got a few simple tools and bought a floor shifter conversion kit and did the change-over work to have a nifty manual-transmission with a floor shift. Not a difficult task for the same HS former Sophomore going-to-be Junior with a common-sense think-tank.

Later in Life ... The more recent Thirty Years +: ... There are no 'simple' parts for a tune-up, and what you need sure costs a lot more $$$. I didn't / don't have all the tools needed to accomplish a tune-up, or understand all the computer and electronic stuff needed to make or fix much of anything under the hood of a vehicle for quite a long while.

I have some basic hand-tools, but parted with my soldering iron a while back because my hands aren't so steady, my eyes not as sharp, and with all the chips and other micro-sized stuff used to 'tune-up' a detector and make it purr properly, and to design the darned thing in the first place .... is NOT for the average sharp-minded HS Sophomore or Junior.

Making and building the wonderful outdoor sport devices we enjoy using takes a whole lot more education, skill, and forward-thinking knowledge. There are far fewer detector companies around today, and those few need to have some of the sharper-thinking folks who understand all of the new-age digital stuff, and who have a desire to work in the detector engineering and design field. A smaller market to entice educated people to seek them out, and then the companies have to invest enough $$$ in their salaries to keep them. And to do that they need make a lot of $ale$ to have what it takes to stay in the game. Some simply don't have it anymore.

Stay Tuned??? I did that once. All I got was 'snow' or a bunch of colorful lines and a loud noise. N/T
