I kind of agree, but at the same time disagree .at least a little.

"Current technology", which involves models in both the VLF range and LF range, and some selectable frequency models that can span into both frequency ranges, still have a lot that design engineers can do to improve the functional behavior and performance of what we have now. Minelab could add Ground Balance to their Vanquish and give it at least one or two selectable frequencies. White's could take one of their long-time better detectors, the MXT Pro, and fix things a little, as George referred to. Give it a Ground Phase read-out in any mode, not only in the Prospecting mode. Also, provide Manual GB control in any mode, and make sure the GB function is tied-in with the Discriminate mode.

I happen to really like some good analog circuitry models like my two Tesoro favorites. One manufacturer, White's, hired William 'Bill' Lahr to design a detector that could provide competition to the Tesoro circuitry design, and with the Coinmaster Classic (that morphed to the Classic SL series) they had the best and closest competition. Errantly, they dropped the 'Classic' series and replaced it with the terrible Prism series that were renamed the Coinmasters in a burgundy color scheme, and now the Treasure Mast4er and Treasure Pro have been added ... and they all fall short of the Classic series when it comes to available search coil selection as well as in-the-field performance.

White's could keep the MXT Pro / All Pro alive and competitive if they added manual GB, perhaps offered a 2-Tone and 3-Tone audio ID in the Coin & Jewelry mode rather than 7-Tones, and Iron Audio Volume just to step up to the plate and be competitive. Leave the rest as it is because the MXT Pro can work, it just needs a little catching up in functions, and a lower MSRP. It is way over-priced for today's market.

In their current product offering, to appeal to the majority of metal detecting enthusiasts, they only have two models with good features and performance in a competitive price range. The MX Sport, if you want waterproof, and the MX-7 which uses essentially the same circuitry, but is in a lighter-weight and nicer-designed physical package ... and ... is priced very competitively. Other models are over-priced and have some quirks, or they are inexpensive and terrible performing units for their price and the market they are directed toward.

As of how this past week ended with three e-mails from White's combined with their website announcement about how they are dealing with the current virus issues, they definitely fall way short of how their biggest US competition, Garrett, is handling things. It raised a lot of questions, left a lt of things unanswered, and didn't show strong signs of a big business being in control of things.

That said, I would like to see them get a good engineer and come up with something new and competitive ... soon ... if they are going to stay in the market and capture the interest of more of the Avid Detectorist group who have, mostly, been making the switch to foreign-designed and manufactured detectors, and very competitive prices from Minelab, Nokta / Makro or XP. Nope, I'd like to see something good happen, but we sure aren't seeing it as time goes by.

My gut feeling (based on nothing really) is that White’s will be around for some time to come  N/T
