I had to open up the cave to look for it. It is so old that i had to clean off the volcanic ash instead of dust.

It was before batteries when we hooked up electric eels for power. winking smiley I think the Golden Sabre is 1986 if I recall right. Maybe 1987.

Here’s a pic.

There are older detectors out there but I’m pretty sure you’d have to find them frozen in a glacier somewhere in a wooden tote on Monte’s mammoth. grinning smiley

Rich

You have the 'original' Golden Sabre and, according to the Tesoro Model Production List that was sent to Dealers long ago, it shows the following:

Golden Sabre: .. 2/'85 to 2/'92 .. MSRP $399

It was a popular model that a lot of urban Coin Hunters liked for the Notch Disc. to eliminate the pesky 'original' Pull Tabs. You know, those annoying Ring-Pull types.

Monte

Kind of fun to look back on those MSRP's and compare them with what folks can buy today. It had Notch Disc. adjustment, but no All Metal mode for Pinpointing. However, the very quick-response and fast-recovery made that task pretty easy. The standard coil was a round, 8" diameter designed with a small hole in the center. Just a single tone, but very good performance in most ferrous debris environments. The Disc. range lower-end was a little high, something along the lines of what might be a D-90 or D-100 adjustment range. We didn't get the popular ED-180 Discrimination circuitry until 3/'90 with the original Bandido.

That $399 was the brand new MSRP, and if a shopper looked at some of the non-display models in that class today, what a difference there is. Look at the Vista 'X' I have listed in the Buy / Sell / Trade section for $500. It is also a silent-search, slow-motion circuitry with Quick-Response and Fast-Recovery, but it also comes with 2 search coils. The standard 'octagon' coil and an excellent 5¾" DD, and the small coil gets better depth than the Golden Sabre w/8" Concentric. It features manual Ground Balance, full-range Discrimination adjustment (ED-180 in Tesoro lingo), 2-Tone Audio ID, Variable Volume Control and Iron Volume Control, which are all features not found on the Golden Sabre. We do have some great detector values available to us these days, depending on what we are shopping for.

"Your EYES ... the only 100% accurate form of Discrimination!"
