My count is at '8' but they have all be a surprise find. In the early '70s I found my first in Portland Oregon. Then I went a spell until I lucked upon four Large Cents at an old-use, out-of-the-way location on the Yamhill River south of Portland a ways in the latter '80s. Those all dated from the teens through the forties.. Then in '87 I pulled an 1851 LC out of 'Twin Flats' Utah ghost town hunting with my friends, Debbie and Donnet, followed a month later by an 182? at the old stage-stop in Huntsville Utah.
There I was hunting with my friend Davis at his brother's house, since they owned the old stage stop site. I had parked by an older tree and was hunting maybe fifty feet away and kept looking at my vehicle for some inquisitive reason. So, I walked back, pulled forward about twenty feet and started searching where I had been parked. A half-dozen sweeps later I was holding that Large Cent. That got me to LC #7 and I figured I was very fortunate to nab those because I might not find another.
Then, thirty long-years later in 2017, OregonGregg, UtahRich and I were hunting 'Lone Tree' and I thought for sure I was going to recover a nice Seated Liberty Half with the high VDI reading I got with my Nokta FORS Relic. Rich walked over from a short break and watched me recover that one, an 1853 LC. I'd kind of preferred a Seated Half, but beggars can't be choosers, and whenever you venture out to any old ghost town .... you are a beggar, for anything good, so you don't leave skunked.
You never know when one might come your way. Matter-of-fact, OregonGregg was surprised at my find that day, and for a few days after saying he couldn't believe I found a large Cent there ... even had a ring in the tone like he questioned my find because he had just hunted 'close' to that spot. Then, surpprise0surprise, just about two months later, hunting there in 'Lone Tree' Gregg found
his first Large Cent. And that was just in his 4th year of detecting so he didn't have to hold out as long as you or I did to make such a find. It took me almost nine years to snag one.
You just never know, and since you get out to as many old and out-of-the-way places as you can find, in a metro area that had some early history, you just might chance upon a 2nd, or more, Large Cents. If so, however, you'll have to be VERY lucky to find one in the condition like your new recovery is.
