I was the one who jumped in with tips to set up the 5900, if set up right with higher Signal Balance and G.E.B.Disc set to knock out a common nail and Ground Balance set at 'spot on' it has performance that excels theMinelab explorer.
Hi zincoln, I own and operate a 5900 CB, the last of the series and improved over all. Keith Southern only touched on the all-metal aspect of the 5900, it was not clear in that thread but I think he was talking about S.A.T. self adjusting threshold with target ID. If you noticed in that thread that I was helping Flinstone set up his 5900 for peak performance.
You were helpful on that post back in 2017, but that means you're now 68 and, like me, you might be feeling a bit of fatigue with the older, bigger-box detectors. And in this thread, Senior Deacon has the
White's 5900 Di Pro Plus. It is quite different from the final 5900 Di Pro SL 'CB' version circuitry, plus it is in a much heavier, bigger configuration. That was the old blue box, and the 'Plus' came with the relocation of the needle meter display sticking out from the handle. It was also before they improved the circuitry to allow a somewhat modest sweep speed, and it was well before they had the Signal Balance control.
But some of those older White's models were sure fun-to-use. Most of that thanks to the excellent needle meter and a smooth-sounding audio. I have a 6000 Di Series 3 in the factory Hip-Mount configuration that I bought a year ago. Still has the factory box and the two light-blue zippered bags for the different sections. It is in about 98% condition,
or better, physically, but needs a little overhaul on the circuitry. Just need to find a sharp engineer who knows how to track down and fix the auto-tune that doesn't.
It is good to have some new Forum members who have a bit of experience under their belt. Might just be some good added help for the younger upstarts in this great sport.
Now, if we can get rid of this very dense smoke haze so I can breathe better, I'm going to let my trusty moderate-weight XLT and 6½" coil take a break and get in some hunt-time with my much lighter and better-balanced MX-7 and other 'lightweights' I have in my detector team.
