When your younger, yes you can move pretty fast, dig a lot of targets, especially if you have competition near buy
I remember those days because this getting older-and-slower makes it tough. Nowadays I have a challenge competing with myself!
I remember seeing the changes in recovery ration over just a few active years. By 'active' I man both the amount of activity by younger folks who used to get out all the time and play in the playgrounds or sports fields, and also the activity as this great metal detecting hobby grew so rapidly. In '68 and '69 Ed & I would hard-hunt the locals parks and schools that had seen a lot of activity over decades past. At hat time, our Dimes, Quarters and Halves were about a 8 or 10-to-1 ratio, of silver-to-clad, and even in '71 and '72 those same high-production heavy-use places were still producing about 4 or 5 silvers for every clad.
But that was when the hobby was really starting to surge and soon you could see people out detecting all over the place almost anytime. The lost coins were being found and recovered, but modern activity continued and the newer coin loss soon outnumbered the old stuff when combined with what was being cleaned out. By '75 to '78 I had witnessed the changes in that ten year span and it was more like you related, about 5 clad to every 1 silver.
The good thing was that even though the silver vs clad percentages had changed, there was still a lot of coins out there to be fund. Much more activity, money carried, and money lost compared with the last three decades. Back then, even when there was a smaller percentage of silver coins, you could still find a LOT of coins to fill your pockets, or pouch, or jar or whatever started out the day being empty.
Fortunately, in most places there is less modern-day competition to confront as the detecting hobby participants have dwindled. I guess that's one advantage for those of us hanging in there as we've ripened a bit.
