A good reply, Brian, which brought a few things to mind.

You are very correct in each of us in this great sport ought to use a detector and coil, learn it, then like it or leave it so that we end up liking and enjoying whatever it is that satisfies our wants and needs. In my case, I had experiences with the brand new 7" Detech DD I bought right at the White's factory. the aftermarket coil made for them by Detech, and I also got the first prototype 6½" Concentric that they brought to me out of production. I still had to have Monte Jr. seal the upper and lower halves together and make a decal for it.

I had very good performance with my new 6½" Concentric coil on that particular new MX-7 that was at the change from prototype to production. But the aftermarket 7" DD coil didn't work well for me. Not in my tests, or in some of the more challenging areas of the ghost towns we hunt. It kind of worked OK, but fell short of performance on the MX-7 compared with the also new 6½" Concentric, and it didn't perform that well when compared with other makes and models I had which also used DD coils.

So that left me wondering a few things, such as:

• Was the MX-7, and therefor the MX Sport, designed more for Concentric coil performance than DD?

• Did I have a glitchy MX-7?

• Was there a problem with that particular 7" DD coil?

• To go a step further, do those after-market coils have a lot of inconsistency from coil-to-coil?

I do know that in urban Coin Hunting settings, at the local park and such, the 6½" Concentric provided me better performance in the way of tighter Target ID when most targets, desirable or not, were located from surface to 4". Also, I used it here in town at three vacant lots where homes had been demolished and two of the lots were pretty much leveled and easily huntable, although they did have a scattering of left-over debris to deal with.

At the time I was comparing the White's MX-7 w/7" DD and 6½" Concentric coils and Nokta / Makro Multi-Kruzer w/5X9½ DD coil, mainly, but also using a Makro Racer 2 w/7" Concentric and White's XLT w/6½" Concentric. I worked three vacant lots, one with a demolition going on while I hunted, as well as a POW Camp and one ghost town. I had to look back to early 2018 in my binder to double check which coils were used when finding the most wheat-back cents, old nickels, and any silver coins. The Multi-Kruzer w/5X9½ DD started out that year OK, but the bulk of the better coins were with the XLT and 6½" and Racer 2 and 7" Concentric coils. The MX-7 was a mix of both the 6½" Concentric and 7" Double-D with the 6½" edging out the 7".

That's what I had remembered about the MX-7 that year, and I tried to figure out why. I did fine with the Racer 2 and 7" Concentric, nd it is an open-frame coil design. But with the MX-7, I opted for the 6½" Concentric coil because it was a solid-body and guess I figured it would be the better set-up to grab so I wouldn't have any hang-up issues from the short stiff weeds and brush in any of the different locations. I had purchased a 2nd MX-7 so I had each of the coils mounted on their own detector and all I had to do was grab the detector/coil combo I wanted.

In hind sight, I honestly like the looks of the Detech 7" DD and still do. I didn't have any hand-up with the solid 6½" DD coil, but thinking back and even to the present, I use a 5X9½ DD on my Simplex + and have on occasion with the CoRe and Relic and back then on the Multi-Kruzer, and the 7" Concentric on the Racer 2 and 5X8 DD on the Vanquish 540 ... and all of those are an open-frame search coil and I seldom get a coil hang-up. So it might have been just one of those logical thoughts back then to grab the solid coil rather than the open-frame coil, even though I might have had no, or very few, coil snags with the 7".

I've used CoPlaner or Concentric coils as long as we've had them and Double-D coils since late '71. Most of the time I have favored a Concentric coil that was 8" or smaller because they provided some of the best Discrimination in iron littered sites and also because they gave slightly better depth and quicker, accurate pinpointing compared with a Double-D coil. A lot really depends on the particular make and model detector and the circuitry design because some detectors simply work better with the one type of coil than they do the other.

It used to be that most of my detectors sported a good Concentric coil and a few in my outfit wore a DD coil. Today, things are different. I have a 6" Concentric on a Tesoro Silver Sabre µMAX and on each of my Bandido II µMAX units, a 6½" Concentric on my XLT, and a 7" Concentric on my Makro Racer 2. But there is an 'OOR' DD on my Nokta CoRe, 5" DD on the Nokta Relic, 5X9½ DD on one Simplex + and 11" DD mounted on the 2nd Simplex +, a 5X8 DD on the Minelab Vanquish 540, and currently each of my Garrett Apex units have the only coil available right now, a 6X11 DD. So the Double-D coils are outnumbering the Concentric coils, and I don't have a problem with that for one very good reason. Those coils ... mounted on those models ... combine to provide excellent performance where I hunt.

Now I am wondering if I might want to track down another Detech-made 7" DD for the MX-7 and check it out again to see if I had a poor-performing coil in the first place .... or do I just want to chalk it up to "Well, that's how things go." and leave it at that. Heck, it sure isn't the only detector I have to us and keep me happy. And I am glad to know you've gotten comfortable with the coil options you have for your handful of detectors, too.
