It misbehaved, and the guy who got it from me got rid of it also. I like the looks of the coil, and I hoped it worked better, but the one I had didn't impress me. But I had, and I've checked out, some different Detech coils on other makes and felt there was some inconsistency in how they worked. Thus, some inconsistency in the coil design and quality control.
I think I got used to that during the very late '80s and through the '90s, even to about 2013. I was used to it because I I have owned a lot of White's detectors, and most of my metal detecting seminars have been in Oregon where many attendees also had White's products. I had a LOT of search coil failures with Whit's. I had a brand new Coinmaster 63 TR I bought in May '71 that was defective, and I had a brand new 6000 Pro XL when they were introduced that had faulty glitches, as well as a Classic ID at about the same time.
But the most frustrating thing for me were some of their search coils that were defecting brand new. Right off their Factory Display Room shelf came a bad Blue Max 300, and I had to have maybe four of their earlier thin-profile 950's replaced since they were not repairable. One or two think-body 950's got fixed, maybe a half-dozen of their different 6½" coils were bad, and two or three of the 8" Coils, too. The worst newer coil was the 10" D2 DD coil. I was given a prototype, and it was bad so they replaced it. I had bad 10" coils on my first Spectra and then again on it's total replacement two weeks later. A few 10" D2's that came standard with the MXT All-Pro didn't work well, either, and those were right out-of-the-box.
The ONLY thing in my favor was that I lived within a reasonably short drive to make a round-drip day's adventure driving down to get things repaired or replaced and that let me check out a few things while there in the display room. So I was used to dealing with search coil related issues, and I guess I didn't expect much better from Detech. Still, I like the appearance of the 7" DD coil design and, if I decide to keep my MX-7, I just might have to acquire another new 7" and give it another try and see f I get a decent-working specimen.
This choice condition MX-7 is working properly so a good-working 7" DD just might get to stay mounted full-time.
Yes, I do like a lot of good Concentric coils, especially on makes and models they work well on. I like the 6" Concentric on my Bandido II µMAX and Silver Sabre µMAX specimens, as well as my Racer 2, XLT and MX-7
(that's 6 units total counting my duplicates). But don't think I am overly-loyal to that type coil design. I have been using Double-D coils since late '71 after they were first introduced by Compass Electronics.
I use a DD coil on any make or model that is, by design, a very good performer with a DD type coil. Currently I have DD's in used on my Garrett Apex units, Minelab Vanquish 540, Nokta CoRe and Relic, Nokta / Makro Simplex + unit
(and those total to 7 units). I keep my Daily-Use Team of detectors on my back seat for any opportunity to get out and hunt in any daily travel. Those include an Apex, V-540, Racer 2, Simplex + and either a Bandido II µMAX or Silver Sabre µMAX. A 'Team' of 5 detectors, with 3 wearing a DD coil and 2 sporting a Concentric. So, as you can see, I am not overly 'Concentric-loyal.'
